Our brains are pretty spectacular, using a wide range of senses and cues to perform various complex tasks. When walking, your brain uses visual cues to help orient and stabilize yourself – suddenly take one of those away, and it will take time to adjust.

Your legs are not exactly the same length. As such, you tend to curve off to the short side over time. When your eyes are open, your brain corrects course without you really thinking about it. When the check is gone, off you go
