Your head has a lot of extremely sensitive nerves, it’s the second most sensitive to touch place on your body. If you want to focus on thinking then you need to drive out the input from the environment around you, and one way to do it is by focusing on a single strong sensual stimulus so that it can “overshadow” the other things you perceive and allow you to look inwards, which we do kinda instinctively by looking into a single point in space, concentrating on the background hum, or by focusing on the sensation of your hand touching your face.

Another thing is that being touched on the head by someone close generally calms us and might relieve the anxiety of not knowing something or lower the stress caused by the need to find a solution to a problem or by remembering a certain information, and you know touching yourself is always the second best thing you can get if there isn’t anyone else to do that for you
