why do pit toilets work without toilet paper

I work in a part of the world where pit toilets are the norm (e.g restaurants, homes, public toilets). Sometimes there is a bidet hose but usually there is just a hand jug and maybe a tap to refill.

I understand the basic principles, but can people really get themselves clean with just a small splash of water? How does this work?

the same way you can just wash your hands with just a splash of water, except multiple times because you don’t only do it once, like with your hands. and also you dont constantly touch things with your buttcrack so the main focus is just removing residue for comfort, like with toilet paper
