Why do plastic Snapple bottles “crackle” when you squeeze them?

It reminds me of breaking a glow stick because it only happens once per spot. My guess would be there’s a thing layer of glass between two plastic layers or it’s the glue separating to plastic layers. But I’m not sure why either of those two alternatives would be preferred over just plastic.

A lot of bottles are multi-layer; you’re delaminating the layers when you squeeze it like that.

Sometimes there are layers of different plastics to get all the barrier properties needed. Other times it’s just a center recycled layer sandwiched between two virgin plastic layers for guaranteed purity in contact with the food.
