You don’t need to be rich to be clean. I can understand infrastructure issues and other government things but when you look at the rivers and streets there should be no reason they are that polluted with blatant trash like bottles wrappers plastic clothes etc.
Surely they can see what there doing? Indian people are some of the smartest people around. So why is it?

All of the other answers are just thinking about gdp and money. Money is not the problem,poverty is not the problem. Sri lanka which is a poorer country than india have way better cleanliness, one would be shocked to compare. Yes poverty plays a part in india’s trash problem but it’s more of mindset problem than money.
