I’m talking about phone cords like [this](https://external-preview.redd.it/l6EY6iy7qewdf0NOJawX88AL4YR09LfbGcnu4iam73I.png?auto=webp&s=b43efa75d421ba5cb68b9c48e7bd7309fe2d458f) but I have a current issue with a hose made the same way. I tried [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeSycf6A7pI) that keeps coming up and it doesn’t work, so I would like to see if anyone has an explanation so I can know what’s causing it in the first place to maybe help me understand how to undo it.

It happens when the cord gets twisted a different number of turns than the number of loops in the coil. For a phone, this can happen if you pick the phone up with one hand, talk for a while, maybe switch it to your other ear, and hang up with your other hand. For your hose, pulling it straight untwists it, and it didn’t get the right number of twists in it when it coiled back up.
In the video, opposite sides of the kink are being rotated a full revolution relative to each other, and in the direction that tightens the coil.
