It’s easier to avoid being banned if the service that originated the conversation has no record of any communication with the victim.

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted so in theory the message only exists on the two phones. If they have disappearing messages enabled, then the messages get wiped out automatically. This would eliminate evidence of the crime.

Text messages (that aren’t RCS) are not encrypted and stored on phone company servers for an indefinite period of time.

whatsapp have an encrypted message system therefore messages cant be traced and its only you and the other person that can see them. even whatsapp cant see your messages.

Its easier to make you click bad stuff and give them access. They can make the links look more legitimate.

Plus its free to open a new whatsapp once banned.

on top of everything else already said, most of these scams are actually corporations as scary as that sounds. The initial contact via text is like the cold caller in sales who then transfers you to the “more experienced operators” to build the relationship / scam and eventually close the deal.

In general, whatsapp is easier for multiple people on the other end to be able to log-into so they have round the clock coverage to build that trust with you. In general, the scamee is likely talking to 4 or 5 different people. Yes, the scam companies behind the scenes even have full conversation reviews and training with new associates… what should you have said here, what could you have done better in this situation, etc.

I’m happy to answer any questions, I’ve taken a lot of time to learn about these operations and it one point was considering writing a blog to help people recognize the different types of scams and how to see them quickly and easily.
