Why do seatbelts stop when you pull them hard?

EDIT: I understand that it’s supposed to be for safety. I’m asking because I’ve only experienced the stopping mechanism when I pull. I’ve hit the brakes very abruptly before but nothing. Should I get it looked at?

When you break, you know you’ll break and you most likely “hold” yourself instinctively not to be projected forward. You may not even notice this.

Try sitting in the passenger seat and ask someone else to drive and break abruptly when you least expect it. You’ll notice a different result, if they break abruptly enough.

Mechanic here. I aggree with RurouniRinku answer, but as for your second question. Yes you should a 100% get them looked at or replaced! Also if you notice some threads getting loose in the fabric of the belt, the structural integrity is compramized and needs to be replaced or it could snap, when you need it to hold.

You can also notice in older cars when you loosen the seatbelt and it does not retract all the way, those ones I would also replace.
