Why do slugs dissolve if you sprinkle salt on them?

I’m mildly disturbed that nobody has pointed this out yet – kids, please don’t try this at home…
Poured salt on a slug once to see what happened about 15 years ago. Still feel like a monster murderer and feel horrible about it. It was awful. Don’t do this folks.
well because the vigina walls are mainly made of salt should absolutely not dissolve “snail trail’ btw #momsknowsbest’
