When you touch something that has a strong smell (like poo or when you break a perfume bottle), the smell tends to stay on your hand even after you washed your hands, sometimes even after you take a long shower. Not an explanation but if you have problems with the smell of onions on your hands after cutting them it helps to rub them against stainless steel (not chrome plated). No soap needed. Just water and stainless steel (like some sinks are made of).
