Why do so many counties have names that end in “-istan”?

It means ‘place’ (or ‘land’, depending on how you translate it) in Persian. Which is why you largely find it in places the Persian empire had influence.
Kazakhstan: place/land of Kazakhs. Uzbekistan: place/land of Uzbeks. Etc.
