Like smallpox, chickenpox, herpes, etc. Is this an immune response from the body or is the virus for some reason causing damage to the cells in a way that causes bumps?

Bumps and lesions are how some virus are spread. The virus causes the infected areas to break out and infect more hosts via contact.
