Why do some establishments like gyms charge you for the first and last month simultaneously?

It seems like gyms tend to engage in shady and sneaky practices, and I’m curious what the logic is for charging the first and last month in one shot.

Some places charge for the first month when you sign up, and then charge for the last month when you cancel your membership. This is because they want to make sure they get paid for at least one full month, even if you cancel early.

1. It guarantees that every new member will be a paying member for at least 2 months.

2. It prevents members who are planning on cancelling from continuing to use the gym for free through the grace period they have set for the regular monthly membership fee due date.

3. If you plan on leaving but you know you’ve already paid for another month, you’re more likely to continue going for that last month, and also more likely to change your mind and end up staying.
