Why do some Indian women were a loose scarf around their neck?

What is the scarf some Indian women wear that falls on the left side of them?

New job and I want to learn and understand the culture of my amazing coworkers. One of them is a mother and her daughter also works with us, and they both wear what seems to be a lightweight scarf loosely around their neck and then falls to their left side.

I’ve been trying to Google and find what it is myself but no luck. It’s not a dupatta, or maybe it is but one much less covering?

I’m not sure how to really describe it. They were them at all times and not just the winer so it’s not like a shawl for the cold.

Any ideas?
