Why do some islands use “Head” in their name?

Does it mean anything? Islands such as Hilton Head come to mind.

It’s often short for headland which is like a reverse bay or land that is surrounded by water on three sides, like a peninsula or small cape.

Longer headlands are known as “necks” at least in this part of the world. When they get longer they’re known as peninsulas
