Animals evolve colouration that fits their environment and lifestyle – lions need to creep up on animals in grassland so their colours blend with grassland, jaguars work in the patchy light of jungles, so their coats are patchy. What about zebras? How are black and white stripy animals suited for protection in the savannah when their predators have adopted a muted gold to blend in? Their colours are intended to confuse, like some camoflage on ships – dazzle camoflage. When they move it can be hard to work out which way and how fast they are moving, so what looks bright to us, works to help protect them.

In short, animals have colours – whether spots, stripy, blended or monochrome that works in their environment.
