Long aerials help give better reception on short wave radios. Being in the middle of nowhere, sometimes short wave is the only way to communicate. The aerials are flexible at the base so if they strike obstacles or if the vehicle rolls over, then they won’t be bent or damaged.

A tall aerial also lets other drivers see that you are coming over a rise before they can see the rest of you and helps prevent collisions.
