As well as how hard the engine is working, there’s often simply the fact that a smaller engine had been optimised to give high end power would a larger engine may well be optimised for efficiency.
For example a 1l bike engine might produce over 150bhp, but even running lower down the rev range it will never be as efficient as a typical 2l car engine, it’s made to be powerful and light weight.
