Why do some things feel good on a sore throat?

How come things like sucking on candy, or cough drops, feel good. But apple juice, which is also sugary, usually feel a bit rough going down. What’s the reasoning for this?

Sucking on candy produces saliva, which lubricates your throat with saliva.

Apple juice, along with most juices, is acidic, so it lubricates your throat with *acid.* As you can imagine, this does not pair well with easily-irritable sore throats.

My go to is always, Mint tea, with honey (to taste) and lemon (a 1/8 squeezd in the tea after the honey). OMG so good. I drink it all winter. When I get a sore throat I drink even more. It really helps and keeps you hydrated.
