Why do some trees shed their leaves in spring and not in autumn?

I believe it’s all about anti-freeze. Trees that need to protect themselves from harsh cold suck out all the sugars from their leaves and drop them, the sugars act as antifreeze for the tree’s circulatory system. Trees that don’t need this protection from cold generate new leaves in spring and drop the ones that are less productive at absorbing light
