If I was driving 8-10 hours per day I’d want an auto… I know manuals used to be cheaper and are still a little cheaper, but I’d have thought the reduced effort would be appealing.

Like everyone says, it’s for the same reason everyone else in Europe has driven mostly manuals, but I’ve got to ask where you’re getting your taxis!
Most modern minicabs I’ve been in are hybrids or electric, so automatic.
