Why do Taxi drivers in the UK and Europe drive cars with predominantly manual gearboxes

If I was driving 8-10 hours per day I’d want an auto… I know manuals used to be cheaper and are still a little cheaper, but I’d have thought the reduced effort would be appealing.

i drove both types of car

Ask yourself why in Rally competitions they use manual gearboxes? more control on car behaviour;
fuel consumption and price difference have a minor impact when you buy the car because is possible to buy a gas or methane car to save on fuel

Furthermore if an automatic gearbox or a manual one breaks down which will be cheaper to maintain and repair?

In snowy and mountainous countryside places I prefer the manual transmission, inside city traffic automatic gearbox is better.
But overall I prefer manual transmission

plus in Italy (where I’m from) automatic transmission is still considered fine just for beginners whom cannot drive properly

TL:DR
more control while driving, cheaper maintenance and repair prices
