It is called perspective. It is a geometry effect in how light travel from an object to your eye.

Put a point on a paper relative close to the left edge, the edge represents your retina. Draw two vertical lines of equal length to the right of the point at different distances. Then draw a line from the top of the object through the point to the left edge. Repeat for the bottom and not notice that the distance between the line on the left edge is smaller for the line that is farther away.
So light from the object his a smaller part of you eye the farther away the object is and the is why it looks smaller.
