Why do truck drivers in movies honk their horns by pulling on a rope above their heads? Do trucks not have the button to activate the horn inside the steering wheel like normal cars?

Truck driver here.

The air horn is above your head and actuated by a pull cord which actually pulls in the valve. Some trucks have them actuated by buttons but most that I’ve seen have the pull cord.

You’re actually opening and closing the valve with the pull cord.

You also have what is referred to as a city horn which is in the steering wheel. That is more like a car horn.
