Because not blinking damages our eyes. The other alternative (manually blinking all the time) takes a lot of energy and focus to do repeatedly. We have the ability to do it manually for certain situations (focusing on a predator for example), but it’s just that, an ability.

Blinking is involuntary. Just like breathing. You do it 24/7 but you’re not “thinking” to do it. Your body works for you.

If we didn’t blink automatically, then it would require constant cognitive attention to blink manually. Blinking eyes keeps them hydrated, clean, and prevents damage.
