Why do we close our eyes when we sneeze?

It’s a simple reflex, but there is no definitive answer as to what function it serves.

Could be to keep expelled particles from entering the eye, to keep contaminated mucus from traveling through the tear duct into the eye, to protect your eyes from being scratched during the involuntary movements of a sneeze, etc.

It is definitely NOT to keep your eyes from popping out.
