It’s a time during which your brain isn’t engaged with consuming new information or sensory input. It’s essentially a form of meditation and it’s not too different from the concept of a sensory deprivation tank wherein you’re placed floating in a completely darkened environment to free your mind of distraction.
You’ll note that if you listen to the radio while showering, especially something like news radio, your brain will be engaged with listening to the audio and you don’t have as many random thoughts.
