Why do we feel bored?

Bigger brains require more stimulation for proper function.

Compare us to other creatures. A fish for example, very small brain, and most of its time is spent swimming to stay alive. A spider, an animal with an even smaller brain, builds a web and just sits there, doing nothing because it doesn’t need to. Now take dolphins. Very big brain, and is quite similar to humans. They still do whatever they need to stay alive, like hunting eating, and breathing, but dolphins play with each other, give each other names, use pufferfish to get high, and take turns trying to flip humans off surfboards. Those aren’t necessary for “survival”, but they do it because they are bored.

Now being bored is really a hidden impulse for proper function, since being bored for too long can damage the brain since not using enough brain will cause unused parts to decay. This is why you forget things because not thinking of a memory for too long will cause you to forget it. Humans and other big-brained animals are tuned so they get bored to avoid decay but they also know when to stop, since doing too many unnecessary things will cause you to waste precious energy needed for survival.
