[Mirror neurons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_neuron) are a somewhat contentious topic, but may be part of the answer. They’re a subsystem of our central nervous system that lets us indirectly experience what we see others experiencing.

If true, they would be very useful, letting us learn without actually doing, and lay the foundation for sympathy.
