The explanation I saw on Beakman’s World (AKA ELI5: the show) ages ago is that the shower is an enclosed space, which creates reverb, and voice reverb makes people sound better (which is also why every karaoke mic has reverb). Also, if you are singing in the shower, you are certainly happy and comfy, which helps.
Another fun phenomenon: resonation. When you hit the correct pitches for the enclosure, the space resonates and produces a musical amplified sound from perfect vibration matching (amplification in physics is a different phenomenon).
To the less sciency connection. This vibration in an enclosed space has a similar effect to humming. While this science is also not conclusive, humming may stimulate relaxation/good feelings in some people. The shower amplifying this, coupled with relaxing warm water, makes it even more relaxing.
So, whether you sing well or not, most people can still get a resonation out of the shower. The bonus is it also sounds cool.
