Why do we feel more tired after a small amount of sleep, as opposed to no sleep at all?

I feel good if I get a small nap less than 45 min. What kills me is if I sleep 7 hours, I will wake up refreshed but if I go back and read and sleep another 20 minutes to an hour I will feel really tired all day. So I just get up shower and make coffee early.
