Why do we feel so calm and relaxed in low warm light like that of an off-white table lamp?

It has something to do with our natural circadian rhythm, and how that rhythm is triggered by light or dark. As the sun goes down, at least historically speaking, the hormone melatonin is produced in your body. Melatonin tells your body what time to go to sleep, based on light levels. In the past, there were no incandescent / LED / whatever lighting, so humans simply went by the light of the season / day.

Hence, as the sun goes down, our body starts to go “Oh yeah, it’s time to chill out and try to go to bed…”

I would assume that lowering artificial light levels has the same or a similar effect.
