Why do we get emotional when sad things happen in movies?

I understand empathy, but why do we feel empathy towards things that we know for sure aren’t real?

I think when a character is well-developed and relatable, it’s easy to forget the story is fiction. Empathy is really the ability to feel whatever someone else is feeling, even if it’s a character.
