Eating kick starts a whole string of processes. This starts when you chew food with the enzyme amylase starts to break down starches into more easily digestible sugars.this act gives warning to everything else that food is on the way to be processed.

These digestive processes are energy intensive making enzymes et al, preparing your system for food to enter it, and your body slows you down to concentrate its energy on these processes. The only way your body knows how to do this is to make you feel sleepy.
