Why do we have daylight savings time and why does everyone just go along with it?

Why wouldn’t I want an extra hour of daylight in the summer after work? If it were in the morning I’d be trying to block it out with blinds so I could sleep until it’s time to go to work, rather than enjoy it swimming, bicycling, or barbequeing.

because we want more light later in the day for the summer time months.

we change it back in the winter for more light in the morning.

thats really about it.

Because of WW1 era Germany. The idea was that moving the clock saves electricity for the war effort. Today it’s disputed if it actually does so, but even if it saves electricity those savings are essentially meaningless. More and more countries abandon dst. The reason it’s still here is basically most people are used to it, and there are always more important things to take care of. There were real talks about stopping the clock switching in the EU in 2019 but then Covid hit…

It was invented so we would use less candles. I believe Ben Franklin has a paper about how much the average Frenchman saved by adjusting the time.

Why we still have it? Most of the US is heavily affected by the shortening of days in winter and the lengthening of them in summer. So we want more time in the light in summer and winter, just different parts of the days.

I was told that daylight savings will never end because the US tried it and too many young kids were getting hit while walking to school in the morning.
