Why do we have daylight savings time and why does everyone just go along with it?

Because of WW1 era Germany. The idea was that moving the clock saves electricity for the war effort. Today it’s disputed if it actually does so, but even if it saves electricity those savings are essentially meaningless. More and more countries abandon dst.
