Literally less than 10 minutes ago I had to figure out where to place some patches on a child-size top using an adult-size top as an example. I need to line them up the same places proportionally, so I can use the adult-size top (dimensions of top and distance of patch to seams and the dimensions of the child size top to for x (distance patch needs to be from seams).
We also use it a lot in home improvement projects to figure out how to center things or calculate how much material to buy. My husband even used trigonometry to figure out the weird angles on our wraparound deck stairs.
