One interesting observation: many technical fields have a long *sequence* of prerequisites, whereas non-technical fields are based more on breadth of knowledge. If you decided in your sophomore year to major in physics, it might be difficult to satisfy all the prerequisites, but if you decide to major in literature you could take many courses at once.

Maybe because of this, students are required to take certain math courses, just in case.

Solve for N

N=y – 2007

where N is the number of years since I last used algebra and y is the current year. 2007 is a constant and represents the year I graduated high school.

Literally less than 10 minutes ago I had to figure out where to place some patches on a child-size top using an adult-size top as an example. I need to line them up the same places proportionally, so I can use the adult-size top (dimensions of top and distance of patch to seams and the dimensions of the child size top to for x (distance patch needs to be from seams).

We also use it a lot in home improvement projects to figure out how to center things or calculate how much material to buy. My husband even used trigonometry to figure out the weird angles on our wraparound deck stairs.

They need to make sure students master basic math before introducing algebra, and then trig.

Sudents should be required to completly master decimals, percentages, and fractions, first.

Im seeing way to many highschool graduates that can’t count change.

So you want to buy a car that costs some money m but you need x amount of money cause of taxes. Which is 25%. So how much money do you need?

If you have learnt algebra its a simple question.

(1-0.25)×x=m

x=m/0.75

Its part of thinking. A key idea is to know what this = means. It means it is the same as. Or you know >, <. You quite often think in terms of amounts, variables and reactions between them. This is algebra.
