A movie might be 90 to 200 minutes long. A trailer is only 2-4 minutes long. It’s a lot faster to edit a trailer than it is to edit the entire movie.
A lot of movies are scheduled for release around other movies releasing. If studio A has two movies coming out, they wont release them at the same time, because then they are competing with themselves. Also, you don’t want to release your movie at the same time as a big box office hit like Avengers or Avatar, so they schedule accordingly.
For a start, just because the trailer looks done doesn’t mean the movie is.
Obviously they’re going to show the parts of the movie that are already finished. That doesn’t mean all of it is. It probably means it’s all filmed, but that doesn’t mean that postproduction is done.
But also movies don’t just release the moment they’re finished. Release times are scheduled based on when the studio thinks it’ll do well. For example, January and February are referred to as “dump months” and rarely do big movies release during these times, for a few reasons. The main reason is probably that after the Christmas period, people are generally less inclined to spend whatever disposable income remains on entertainment. It’s also because the weather sucks and people don’t want to go out as much.
Eligibility for various awards can also be a factor, depending on what kind of film it is. Films released in January aren’t eligible for the Oscars until the next year, by which time most people will have forgotten about it.
It’s the same with any form of entertainment. Books, video games, movies, TV shows: they don’t release as soon as it’s done, they release whenever the marketing people think it’ll do best.
When a movie is first released, studios will release a trailer to give audiences a taste of what the movie is like. However, the full movie won’t be released until months later. This is because it takes time for the studio to produce enough copies of the movie to send out to theaters around the world. Additionally, studios want to create hype around the release of their movies by releasing trailers early on. By making people wait for the full movie, they’re more likely to talk about it and build up excitement leading up to its release date.
