why do we leave bay leaves whole and pick them out after cooking when all other spices are ground down to powder?

TIL Bay Leaves aren’t poisonous. My Mom used to tell us kids that they were okay to add for flavor but you can’t eat them because they were “toxic”. It never made much sense to me but I believed it up until this point. Maybe she just didn’t want us to choke.

In some spice mixes, there are minute amounts of ground bay leaves; however, as most other users said, it is mostly due to bay leaves’ not dissolving nature.

One of the common spice mixtures that contains bay leaves is the Old Bay Seasoning (no pun intended on my end). I am not joking.

It’s ground in the Cajun mixes. As it is my bay leaves are well over a year old. Would I use more in ground form? Possibly.

Was taught it was lucky if you ended up with the bay leaf as a kid. Now as an adult, cooking for one, I act surprised when I end up with it.

If left in the dish, they will get very bitter. You remove them as soon as you turn off the heat to avoid the bitterness. This is what i was told.
