Why do we need roofs on houses? Why can’t we just build it flat on the top?

i mean people do that, but not in snowy areas because the snow will accumulate and the whole entire flat roof is gonna come down
Flat roof allows rain to pool. You’re begging for a leak. You would get moss/plant life growing. The weight of the water would add a lot to the structure and cause it to fail.
Generally you don’t want water sitting stagnant on a structure. Sloped roofs get rid of it better.
Some parts of the world are worried about snow, which also requires sloped roofs but maybe make them steeper. Some places may not really care about rain because it’s not a rainy place. Some may be more worried about wind forces.
