Why do we prefer larger screens when we can enjoy the same field of view by sitting closer to a smaller screen?

We can easily tell that close objects are close because of things like focus and the way our two eyes have to converge to view them. That makes it harder to imagine that the images are really far away so films, TV shows, etc. are less realistic and engaging. It’s also harder to share the view with others. Virtual reality headsets use optics to work around these issues but they’re strictly one-person devices and have other issues.
