Why do we put our weight towards the side we fall when trying to balance?

I’ve always wondered why when you start to go off balance, you automatically swing to the side which you are falling.

Surely it would make more sense to swing the other way in order to counterbalsnce the falling motion?

It might seem like you are leaning the wrong way but you are actually moving your center of gravity to the other side.

Imagine this ”C” as your body viewed from the side

The top of the body leans towards the falling direction but the middle body is shifted to counter the falling direction.

As your torst is the heaviest part of your body it will counter the fall but in order to move it over there, you need to fling your arms towards the falling direction
