Why do we reference centuries a step ahead of the year? For example 1900s – 20th Century?

Why not 20th Century being 2000- 2999?

Year 0-99 is the first century.

Year 100-199 is the second century.

Year 200-299 is the third century.

So year 200 = 3rd century, not the 2nd.
