Why do we reference centuries a step ahead of the year? For example 1900s – 20th Century?

Why not 20th Century being 2000- 2999?

When a baby is born they are technically zero years old. The time between their birth and their first birthday is their first year. The time between their first birthday and second is their second year. Same thing for centuries.

1-100 was the first century, not the zeroth. 101-200 was the second, and so on until 2001-2100 is the 21st.

Ask yourself:

What years were during the first century after year zero?
