Only when you’re trying to sleep does your mind rush to unsettling and embrassing thoughts. Why is this?

This is the time when the little people (personified emotions) inside your brain actually have time to actually talk to each other. They are able to have numerous discussions within a small amount of time. Now, the events that are the most dramatic/embarrassing/interesting to them, like gossiping, they will wanna talk about and emphasize the most about. So then they wanna tell you about it since you’re their main host/best friend that they HAVE to remind you about. So this is how I’d some it up.

Consider it to be a review process in which you learn behaviours to avoid in future, so you can sleep better.

Your mind is no longer distracted by stimuli. Try mindfulness meditation. It will help you occupy your brain on things other than embarrassing thoughts.

I just realised this is ELI5. So I’m gonna give it another go.
Your body is a company. Your brain is the big boss. Your 5 senses (touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell) are managers. During the work day, the managers are constantly sending the big boss field reports. The big boss then makes decisions on how the company is run from those reports. After work finishes (when your trying to sleep) the boss is no longer getting reports but still wants to make decisions about how to run the company perfectly. So he looks through old reports (memories).
