I just realised this is ELI5. So I’m gonna give it another go.
Your body is a company. Your brain is the big boss. Your 5 senses (touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell) are managers. During the work day, the managers are constantly sending the big boss field reports. The big boss then makes decisions on how the company is run from those reports. After work finishes (when your trying to sleep) the boss is no longer getting reports but still wants to make decisions about how to run the company perfectly. So he looks through old reports (memories).
