You have each gene twice, one copy from each parent. But in many cases one gene is stronger than the other so only one will be active. (For example brown eyes overwrite every other colour)
Wich of their two genes your parents give you is chosen randomly, so you get either your granpas or grandmas gene. That means your siblings can look different since they possibly receive the one from the other grandparent.
And that also means features can skip a generation, your parent carried the gene but for them it was overwritten by a stronger one that you didn’t get.
