We’re a very social species. We have a lot of responses for letting others know what’s going on with us. Many animals try to stay very quiet to hide themselves or their pain to avoid attracting attention.

Humans attract attention on purpose because it’ll also attract help from our group mates. Sounds of pain, panic or distress tend to immediately attract attention from bystanders.

It’s actually known that screaming and saying obscenities decreases the intensity of the pain. So it likely was something that evolved over time, which explains why it seems like it is a reflex
