If you lightly push with your palms on your eyes for a minute, you start to see some wild visuals. Is this harmful?

Am I the only one that sees a kaleidoscopic interior of a torus with a checkered pattern? It’s often this trippy warped checkerboard pattern for me.

When I was a kid, I’d sometimes rub my eyes while in church. I interpreted the resultant blobs of colors floating around (phosphenes) as the presence of God floating around His church.

It happens to me as well as a person with Visual Snow syndrome, I just kinda see it all the time

I have aphantasia. I don’t see anything if I do this, or just a vague suggestion of some colors (mostly blue and white) mixed with black. Might it have something to do with my aphantasia? Must be cool to be able to see all kinds of shapes.

Other people have given good answers already but if you’re interested in other eye-opening questions about our eyes, I saw a video recently where an ophthalmologist did a Q&A and tackled a very similar question: https://youtu.be/LwO086rYjEQ?feature=shared&t=533
